I have just applied divorce 2 weeks ago.
At the first my husband got a letter from Land registry office.
Then he got a letter from my sol requested for all of his financial documents (it was 10 days ago, but he refused to send them to her).

Solicitor asked me to pay 908.75 pounds for divorce.
£450.00 solicitor's fees (she is paralegal)
£78.75 VAT
£300.00 divorce petition fee
£40.00 Decree Absolute fee
£40.00 Consent Order fee
= £908.75

at the moment, she has been away and nothing progress.
My husband is self repper.
I don't think I can pay all my legal fee.
So I tried to talk him to sort out settlement by ourself the other day (it causes another problem though...).

If we can agree the settlement, can I change solicitor from high street to online one at this stage?
I haven't got any court letter from her to sighn on, except a letter about how much it is per hour to pay her.

And if it is Online one, still do I have to present on court?

If someone knows about it, please give me any advice it will be great... thank you...

The prices that you quote sound pretty reasonable for processing a divorce and a consent order.

If you have already engaged this solictor to start this work then I dont see why you should change now. You will just have to pay the 450 again to another solicitor.

By far the BEST thing that you can do to keep costs low is to come to an amicable agreement with your ex on the finances.

If you cannot see eye to eye and instead slowly get drawn into a long legal dispute over the finances then you can expect to receive a legal bill of 5k to 20k.

So.......

worry less about which solicitor you use - it is really down to you and your ex whether you want to be reasonable and get it all done for the 908.75, or whether you want to fight and contribute to your solicitor's holiday home in the Bahamas.

You can, but you are not going to save much. The only thing that will differ is the base £450 plus VAT - so you may save say £200, but you may find you have spent some of that on your consultation and the letter so far received.

Thank you for your adovice.

I want to get rid of him as soon as possible because he scares me.
He says he is self repper, not ask his solicitor at all.
(he said he paid lots of money to his solicitor for his first divorce). So I can see he will not answer any letter from my solicitor then I have to pay her to sending letter to him on and on and on... He knows it cost a lot to me.
That's why to save some money to pay solicitor, to negotiate with him by myself will be cheaper and quicker to finish divorce.
(But I would like to ask solicitor to check our agreement.I haven't sighned on any yet..at the moment I am waiting she coming back from her holiday (might be from Bahamas !)...

Hi moca
I read your first post, and I think you are really being bullied by your policeman husband. As I said hold on dont sign anything until you have seen your solicitor. He is being very nasty to you. just make sure that you are going to get what you are entitled to.
Dont be scared of him, even though he is a policeman he will not be able to threaten you.
Just sit tight and wait to see your solicitor again.
He cannot force you to do anything.

Polar - yes - the file at all times is your property....the sol is only entitled to keep a copy of it. Ask and you shall receive! (and your closing letter should have told you that).

Moca - at £450 for a divorce, your lawyer will be lucky if she gets as far as Bournmouth....;)
