Are there any site which rate solicitors based in Reading in terms of their helpfulness.

Hi and welcome to wiki,

Many people go on recommendations from friends when choosing a solicitor, you can then check the legal 500 to see if they are amongst the top rated in your area.

This link will show you your area.

www.legal500.com/c/south-east/private-cl...ey-berks-oxon-m4-m40

I hope that helps,

Best wishes,

NWTT.

It''s always useful to ring round - a simple conversation can tell you a lot about their commitment to good service and customer relations. One that I rang was clearly up for a fight - I could practically hear the cash till ringing as she spoke. Another wouldn''t let me past the receptionist - who had no idea what the respective qualifications of the solicitors in the firm were, made it very clear that I had no right even to ask and that I should be honoured for them to take me on as a client (she did know the hourly rate though).

You need to check that they are family law specialists and preferably signed up to appropriate professional organisations like Resolution.

Thanks, I have found it difficult to get past the receptionist and many do not offer the free 1/2 hour consultation, so I can check them out - very frustrating.

Solicitors should have an interest in new enquiries. If they can''t be bothered to give a few minutes to discuss your case and options they are probably not worth the effort.

Start a call by saying "I would like to speak to a solicitor in relation to a new matter, are there any available to speak to?" and see where that gets you. It would be worthwhile specifying what area of law you seek advice upon e.g. matrimonial finaces, children, cohabitation etc.

An experienced solicitor should be able to ascertain enough information from your within a few questions whether they can assist you or not. If they can, they can give you options e.g. fixed fee interview or free interview and if not, the most appropriate next port of call.
