My solicitor’s fees for the financial settlement (not the divorce) are around 3k. Is this normal?

Hard for anyone to say when we don't know how complicated your case was, what work they did or how long it took.

Did they give you an indication of what they expected it to cost?

If your solicitor is to negotiate a settlement, prepare an order and submit it to court, £3k is about right. If the negotiations are extensive the time required will go up and so will the costs unless you have agreed a fixed fee with your solicitor.

The costs could be lower if you and your ex are in agreement and require a solicitor to record that agreement in an order and have the Court approve it. That's the sort of service which this site offers.

The final thing is that your solicitor's hourly rate will vary depending upon which part of the country you are in. In Central London £450 + VAT is not unreasonable and £3k won't go very far at that rate.
