Do all solicitors charge retainers.

I was quoted £240 per hour by a solicitor, when I turned up to the meeting he went straight into saying I needed to pay him £500 and he would tske the 240 out of that. I''m not thinking straight, needed the info so agreed

Looking back it feels dishonest to me not to mention this before the meeting, I wouldn''t quote x to a client and then when they showed up say I need to take double that and pay myself what they used out of that.

I needed the info at the time but still not sure about this guy and why I should be stuck in a relationship especially as we were fleeced by the mediator.

Solicitors usually do require monies on account of costs as clients have a habit of failing to pay their bills.

What you could have said is that you are content to pay for the initial appointment but that you will pay more once you decide whether or not to instruct him.

If you do not want to instruct the solicitor just ask for your money back.
