Am just at the beginning of my divorce, Decree Nisi granted but financials are going to be a nightmare as she won''t go to mediation or talk. I did the form filling to save myself costs on the divorce, so solicitor hasn''t had a huge involvement as yet, just a couple of letters and meetings.

But he is SLOW. I realise this is generally the case but I call and call and can never get through. I''ve been trying to get in touch with him for almost 2 weeks now. I call, leave messages and he is either not at his desk, at court or on another call and they are never returned. In fact, I''m waiting right now...My situation is quite desperate, I need advice and action because the stbx is playing merry hell with my finances and I cannot do a thing.

Any advice?

Is this a legal aid solicitor?.

I don`t think two weeks is acceptable, most try and answer within a week, a really good solicitor the same day or a day or two.

It could be the solicitor is waiting for more information, or there is nothing really to report.

Its always a good idea to talk it over with your solicitor if your not happy with the service before thinking of other options.

Telephone the solicitor''s assistant/secretary and arrange a telephone appointment. Once this is entered in the diary you wait for a telephone call and if it doesn''t occur, you should complain. Mention ''inadequate professional service'' which should ring some alarm bells.

There are good reasons why solicitors delay in responding to you but it doesn''t take much to make a quick call to explain the delays and take your instructions particularly if you have concerns.

In a very similar situation my stbx refuses to discuss anything regarding finaces, why would he I am paying everything. I want to sell the house and move to a smaller one but to do this I will have to take him to court, i don''t see the point.
My solicitor is excellent, whenever I have phoned him he has responded within a few hours, if email he emails the same day.
The only frustrating thing is he keeps advising me to do nothing unless I have money to burn which I don''t..I want to move on with my life but feel as if I can''t I know my solicitor is trying to save me money (he really is fab) but I seem to be stuck.
If I was you I''d try speaking to his secretary, they can usually update you.

I kept leaving my solicitor alone and never rang back until a month or so had passed. I even had his mobile number and was always told the same, out of the office, in court or on leave, after finally getting to breaking point (nearly 6 months later), I phoned to be told he was on sick leave and they couldn''t tell me when he would be back.
I actually got to speak to a partner 2 weeks later who ordered a locum solicitor to get in touch with me, I then found out my original solicitor did not process any paperwork for legal aid (Oct 2011), so was sent another form, that got sent back to them requesting more paperwork, which I returned to them (after a succession of locum solicitors, I then had a replacement one).
The new solicitor found that the form had not been returned back to legal aid, so sent me forms, by which time I was at the end of my tether so made appointment to take paperwork in and check it had correct paperwork.
I had already had to represent myself once in court as legal aid was not in place (with 2 days notice as solicitors had failed to tell me) and not an experience I would want to do again, so was going to make sure I had some for the next appearance.
To have a recalculation done and find I was no longer entitled as children were no longer classed as dependant!!
I can''t afford a solicitor now, so will have to do it myself, had they got their butts into gear it would have been done and dusted.
SO GO KICK SOME BUTT.
Don''t do what I did and assume that it is all ok as you haven''t heard back from them.
I am in a dark place and would not want anyone else to be through what I am going through at the mo.
