I have been married for 24ys to a policeman,he is now taking retirement ,and starting a new job,we are getting a divorce, his solicitor has said that i could have the house, mortgage payed until my son is 18 which is in 5yrs time the house would be signed over to me and a lump sum of 25,000 would be payed to me ,I work as a nurse only part time, and i have a very small pension as i had to leave in parts to bring up the children, the house is worth 210,000 and we have a mortgage of 133,000,his pension i am guessing is 360,000,he also has savings,:(he would like to get him self a home as well, does this sound a fair settlement..would like some advice on this

If he's been paying into a police pension for 30 years it is likely to be worth a great deal more than £360,000..... Don't agree to anything until he produces a CETV for it.

Paulian,
Doesn't sound a very fair settlement at all to me.

His pension, being a police one, is worth considerably more than the CETV. It may well be worth paying for an actuarial valuation of it. See this recent post:

www.wikivorce.com/divorce/Divorce-Forum/...oper-valuations.html

Impossible to say what a fair offer would be without knowing the following:

His / Your income
Your ages
Length of marriage
House Value / Outstanding Mortgage
Number and age of children
Any assets over £500
Any debt - personal or marital
Pension CETV

But suffice it to say that it is looking a little unbalanced at the moment

Hi

Would agree with Mike on that the pension may well be worth a great deal more. I have been married to a police officer for 24 years and we are about to divorce.

Be very careful about doing anything until you have some concrete evidence as to how much the pension valuation is likely to be. From what I have read it could be considerably more than the value of a modest marital home.

I know that my husband is exceptionally keen to preserve his pension at all costs. So there must be a reason for this!
